We Are Proud To Support Human Rights And Democracy
Since the massive asylum seekers demonstration in Tel Aviv on December 28th, there has been a coordinated and unprecedented right-wing campaign accusing NIF/SHATIL and its grantees of instigating the asylum seekers as part of a wider strategy aimed at transforming Israel into a “state of all its citizens.” This is one of the most concerted attacks on NIF for quite some time. For example, Ronen Shoval, who this week announced that he was resigning as Im Tirtzu chair, wrote the following in an op-ed: “Lurking behind the infiltrators is a series of organizations that seek to delegitimize Israel that are financed by foreign countries and funds (such as the New Israel Fund), whose goal is clear: to do away with Israel’s Jewish and democratic character.” Similar allegations have been made by a number of other right-wing figures.
Asylum Seekers March to Jerusalem
A group of around 200 Sudanese asylum seekers marched to Jerusalem in an attempt to gain official recognition of their refugee statuses. Most of the marchers have been imprisoned for almost two years and none of their asylum requests – which were filed with the assistance of NIF grantee Hotline for Refugees and Migrants (previously Hotline for Migrant Workers) – have been answered. Following the protest, they were arrested and transferred to Saharonim Prison, where they will be detained for two months before being returned to the newly established Holot detention center.
New Israel Fund-Supported Groups Win Key Court Victory for African Refugees
Washington DC: A landmark victory for human rights was won in Israel today when an expanded panel of the Supreme Court invalidated the Third Amendment to the Anti-Infiltration Law passed by the Knesset in 2012, which incarcerated more than 2000 African refugees without due process or recourse to the possibility of asylum.
