Stepping up the Fight for Democracy in Israel:
NIF is committed to a vision of Israel that is democratic and egalitarian. And we are ready to fight for it. New Initiatives for Democracy (NIFD) is our concerted campaign to equip Israel’s pro-democracy and progressive forces with the tools to fight Israel’s regressive right—and win.
We are building an interconnected cadre of progressive leadership representing widely diverse constituencies in Israeli society. We are holding the media accountable to ensure it calls out the scourge of disinformation. We are using cutting-edge tools to empower social justice movements and activists. We are reframing foreign policy to provide a new playbook for Israeli progressives. And we are creating new partnerships that expand the constituency for positive social change.
Protecting Democracy
Mickey Gitzen, Director of NIF in Israel, and many other Israeli leaders spoke at Haaretz’s Conference for Democracy. Gitzin and others reflected on the rise of populism and the current state of Israeli democracy.
Shatil Helped Block Harmful Regulatory Reform
Shatil led a coalition of organizations that succeeded in preventing a Kohelet Forum proposal that would have limited the government’s regulatory power.
Announcing Winners of Dror Prize for Social Change
New Israel Fund announced several organizations as recipients of the 2020 Dror Prize for Social Change including The Arab Center for Alternative Planning and organizations protesting government corruption.
Victory for Freedom of Information
Due to the efforts of multiple NIF grantees, Israel’s Ministry of Strategic Affairs has been pushed toward greater transparency.
